Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
