Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
