Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
