The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
