Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Spot.

Initially, Lux could seem closer to a challenging academic quiz rather than a new popular music project from an artist whose last single featured a global K-pop star. Split across 4 different parts and performed in 13 languages, we have a dizzying symphonic album investigating feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone makes the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, and complete credit going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the stakes are far higher here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. What truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues into the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to know—where it will go next."

Nearly every track finishes in a completely distinct point than where it started. A track explores the transient nature of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has become her first work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat is repeated by another powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that takes patience to completely explore but never seem like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
